  • Trigger warning: Mentions slavery/trafficking/abuse/terrorism

Wide-eyed beings of infinite worth
Mistreated for transient thrills
Only recently birthed here on earth
Now abandoned to perverted wills

Diminutive hands meant for play
Clutch bricks in the sweltering heat
Weary faces all powdered with clay
Peer down at their blistering feet

So ravaged are bodies and hopes
Devoured by evil for sport
Restrained by menace or rope
Bright futures by trespass cut short

But suffering won’t reign without end
The corruption of power will cease
He’ll come to judge and to mend
Oppression will give way to peace

‘Till then it’s our cross to take
Injustice and wrongdoing to fight
His Kingdom by action display
To love and to brighten the night

. . .

Our attention and compassion tend to be monopolized by events. Terrorist attacks, wars, natural disasters, etc. But there are tragedies of unimaginable scale that play out on a daily basis, far from the headlines.

I struggle mightily with faith, but when I think of children being enslaved and trafficked, I hope there’s a God, so that one day, true justice will be carried out. In the meantime, let’s support organizations that fight against these evils.
