The film begins with Trudy Ederle as a child on the verge of death from measles in a poor neighbourhood in New York. She miraculously recovers with only hearing damage.
After the tragedy of General Slocum, a side wheel passenger steamboat, which on June 15, 1904, caught fire and sank in the East River in New York City, killing 1,021 of the 1,342 people on board, most by not knowing how to swim, Trudy decides to learn to swim.
