Daisy Ridley Swam ‘Till Her Lips Were Blue’ So That ‘Young Woman and the Sea’ Would Feel Real (Exclusive) | A.frame (oscars.org)

This great film tells the story of Trudy Ederle, a young American, from New York, with German origins.

The first woman to swim across the terrifying English Channel.

The film begins with Trudy Ederle as a child on the verge of death from measles in a poor neighbourhood in New York. She miraculously recovers with only hearing damage.

After the tragedy of General Slocum, a side wheel passenger steamboat, which on June 15, 1904, caught fire and sank in the East River in New York City, killing 1,021 of the 1,342 people on board, most by not knowing how to swim, Trudy decides to learn to swim.

This is the fantastic story of a girl who never gives up

Even in a society where everything and everyone hinders her dream of being a highly competitive swimmer, she doesn’t give up! A narrative of courage, resilience, and success. We are at the beginning of the 20th century, after the 1st world War, where prejudices and the devaluation of women are a general rule. A young woman who wants to break barriers and show the world that the weaker sex is much stronger than it seems.
