Flight of Hope

Ken Loach’s 1969 film “Kes” is a poignant coming-of-age drama based on the novel “A Kestrel for a Knave” by Barry Hines.

The film is set in the bleak, working-class environment of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and follows the story of 15-year-old Billy Casper (David Bradley), a boy who struggles with a harsh and uncaring world.

Billy lives with his neglectful mother (Lynne Perrie) and abusive older brother, Jud (Freddie Fletcher).

At school, he faces bullying from his peers and harsh treatment from the teachers.

Billy’s future appears bleak, with few prospects beyond following Jud into the local coal mine.

Billy’s life changes when he discovers a kestrel, which he names Kes.

Fascinated by the bird, he steals a book on falconry and begins to train Kes, finding solace and a sense of purpose in his bond with the bird.

Through his relationship with Kes, Billy experiences a brief respite from the harshness of his everyday life, discovering a rare sense of pride and achievement.

Despite his newfound joy, Billy’s circumstances continue to conspire against him.
