Concept Art For ‘The Flash’ Season 3 Reveals That We Almost Had A Completely Different (And Armored) Flash Suit
When it comes to superheroes, it’s clear that one of the most important aspects is their suit. Without the right costume, it would be impossible for any hero to truly make their mark (and conceal their true identity). So it’s safe to say that it is one of the most defining aspects of any superhero’s crime-fighting career. And no show highlights this more than The Flash.
It’s fair to say that Barry Allen has undergone quite a few transformations since The Flash first sped its way onto our screens back in 2014. With each “rebirth” has come a new suit. The CW’s iteration of the character is renowned for his trademark leather maroon outfit with its accompanying lightning bolt symbol. And while the suit has changed over the years, all of the variations have maintained these important characteristics.
However, a brand new piece of concept art from has revealed that it almost changed significantly at one point during the show’s run. Concept artist Andy Poon took to social media to reveal a previously unseen armored Flash costume that didn’t quite make the cut.
With heavily armored shoulder pads and a protective chest plate, this outfit was designed during the show’s third season and is drastically different to The CW’s usual leather speedster outfits. This is actually quite ironic as Season 3 is the only season of the show not to feature an updated Flash suit. Barry started out with two variations of the same maroon outfit with a red lightning bolt symbol in Season 1, before eventually sporting one of them long-term. He then swapped out the red lightning bolt for a the comic-accurate white one in Season 2. And after getting a glimpse of it during a trip to the future, he eventually donned the bright red Future Flash suit in the Season 4 premiere.
What is interesting is that while Poon’s armored suit was never used, it definitely seems to have inspired the current Season 4 outfit (which Poon also designed). The yellow tinted specs in the artwork did indeed make an appearance during the second episode of the fourth season, after Cisco installed some ridiculously advanced updates in Barry’s new suit.
