I’m sure the upcoming year will greet us with intelligent, mind-challenging, and innovative cinema… But let’s sum up all the cash grabbing, repetitive sequels and remakes instead. To be fair, some of the films on this list I’m actually really excited for. Because for better or for worse, the sequel has become the standard model for successful films in recent years. So let’s take a look at how this trend will continue in 2017.

Franchises that just keep on going

Underworld: Blood Wars
xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
The Fate of the Furious
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Smurfs: The Lost Village
Cars 3
Despicable Me 3
Pitch Perfect 3
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
Transformers: The Last Knight
Insidious: Chapter 4
Saw: Legacy
War of the Planet of the Apes
Amityville: The Awakening

Whether these franchises started out with good intentions or they were uninspired from the start, these films are part of an endless cycle of mediocrity. This way too long list of films that will most likely be no different from their predecessors show us that studios are willing to put out the exact same content each year in order to get some cash. But really, we don’t need any of these franchises to keep going. Please stop. Enough is enough.

Nostalgia reliant reboots and remakes

T2: Trainspotting
Kong: Skull Island
Beauty and the Beast
The Beguiled
Friday the 13th
Blade Runner 2049
Jumanji
Baywatch
Alien: Covenant
Ghost in the Shell

Ticket sales for these flicks will be driven solely by nostalgia. The films rely on the success of the classic films they are attached to, which will ultimately be their downfall. Inevitably unable to live up to their 80' and 90' counterparts, these films will undoubtedly be a disappointment. That being said, fans will still line up at the theater to see the return of their favorite characters to the big screen.

Sequels we didn’t ask for

Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature
Super Troopers 2
A Bad Moms Christmas (also Bad Dads)
Fifty Shades Darker

I don’t know what to say. Whatever Super Troopers and Nut Job are, I’m pretty sure we don’t need another one. We didn’t ask for these films, we don’t want them, there’s no reason for them to exist.

Sequels we actually want to see

John Wick: Chapter 2
Creed 2
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Cloverfield 2017
The LEGO Batman Movie (also the LEGO Ninjago)

The films that came before captivated audiences, and we want more. These are sequels to recent hits, films that gave us something new and interesting, and we can’t wait to jump back into those worlds. The chance is always small that sequels will outshine their originals, but that won’t stop us from lining up, hoping to recapture at least some of the magic that the first film gave us.

Franchises we can’t help but fall for

Logan
Wonder Woman
Justice League
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Thor Ragnarok
Star Wars: Episode VIII

I must admit, I will faithfully go and see each of these films. These brands have such a tight grip on the industry, audiences have no choice but to anticipate their next release. So far these brands have released steadily decent, if not great content, and even if all of these films turn out to be bad, their 2018 releases will be just as anticipated.
