Leonardo or not? That is the question.

It’s the sixth time Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for Oscar Awards. He was already there, on that list, for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1994, The Aviator in 2005, Blood Diamond in 2007 and The Wolf of Wall Street in 2014. The sad fact is, he hasn’t won an Oscar a single time. That being said, he hasn’t yet ended up on the list of total loosers, among which there are those who have 15+ nominations without a single win (that’s brutal indeed!).

Competition

There are 5 nominees:

  • Bryan Cranston for the role in Trumbo
  • Eddie Redmayne for the role in The Danish Girl
  • Matt Damon for the role in The Martian
  • Michael Fassbender for the role in Steve Jobs
  • Leonardo DiCaprio for the role in The Revenant

Leonardo had a very strong performance, that’s for sure, but where are we with competition?

You have to take into account the fact that Eddie won Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in movie The Theory of Everything last year, where he was playing Steven Hawking. Add to that his ever so difficult and unique role in The Danish Girl and the awards will surely be very difficult for Leo, to say the least.

Bryan was nominated for Oscars a number of times for his role in TV series Breaking Bad and won it two years ago. His role in Trumbo is a transition to movies and was sufficiently successful I have to say. Was it enough? Well, maybe.

Golden Globe

On 10th of January, Leonardo received a Golden Globe for his role in the Revenant. These awards are considered to be strong indicators for Oscars and statistically they are mostly good ones. But let’s have a trip in history and see for ourselves:

  • 2005 - Leo received a Golden Globe for Aviator, but didn’t get an Oscar.
  • 2014 - Leo received a Golden Globe for The Wolf of Wall Street, but yet again didn’t get an Oscar.

Will this one be the third failure in this category and sixth in total? Well, I don’t think so.
