My Six Months Working in the Film Industry
‘I feel I have more confidence than I had in the past and the film industry is definitely where I want to be in the future.’
First and foremost, my experience in the film industry has been amazing, easily one of the better years of my life and I do feel a large part of that does have to do with who I was working with. Community Film Unit, now evolved into a multi-branching media enterprise under the name of Creative Colony has made my first experience as smooth as possible and I feel very privileged to have been able to work with the great people that make up the company.
I’ve been blessed with a fair amount of responsibility that took me by surprise and it’s incredibly satisfying to be in that position as someone lacking industry experience and instead relying on my own experience and putting them to practise to actually achieve something that matters.
I’ve worked on a variety of projects including editing conferences, behind the scenes interviews, shorts on hard hitting topics, trailer promotions and always using different softwares to do so. Not to mention the filming and releasing a little brawn is needed for those long periods of boom holding for the sound, making sure it’s okay and getting to know all the other equipment including the lights and camera.
I’ve even got the opportunity to mass-duplicate DVDs for clients, sure is satisfying to hear so many DVD drives open at the same time! I even got my hands on the DVD printer which was super cool.
I feel that the most important thing that I’ve learned is that there really is so much more to learn. Experience is its own class and I’ve loved it thus far.
I feel I have more confidence than I had in the past and the film industry is definitely where I want to be in the future. I hope to put the skills I have learnt within the past six months to good use and continue learning!
Sounds pretty amazing right? And it was but that’s not to say that there were not challenging or hard days, it’s a lot of a work but that’s the price for quality. Besides, those days are often forgotten simply because of the amazing environment where everyone is 100% dedicated to their craft and to helping each other.
I can only hope that the rest of the film industry is as great as my first experience.
