On a perfect murder
So last night i caught a rerun of a perfect murder starring Michael Douglas & Gwyneth Paltrow. I must say a true classic movie for me anytime, any-day! However, the cliche of one wrong being better than another hence justifying the ‘good always wins’ syndrome has to stop please!
Super rich couple, the wife obviously a trust fund baby does not have to deal with the pressures of keeping above board, automatically translates to the husband who has to work his butt off as not paying enough attention to her. Not like she would be willing to give him the required money if need be…So she decides to have an affair with some lowlife who says hes an artist. Then again there was the age difference between both of them. By today's standards he would probably own (and cherish)the Teddy Pendergrass collection and she would wonder if Teddy Pedergrass was the name of street in Washington DC or something!
I really like the husbands countenance in particular throughout the entire movie. Taking steps to ensure he puts his wife's lover on the spot. Even more so with the lover coming off as obviously stupid. Resorting to blackmail from a failed contract has never been the way to go. Not like he was asked for a refund from the initial deposit.
The scene on the train where the husband waited to kill the lover has got to be a silent triumph for every man who has a wife and would not possibly like to live with being taken for a ride… ‘You should thank me. Artists are always appreciated more after they’re dead!’
I know of people slipping to make a mistake which eventually always leads to being nailed down. I really dont see a character like the husband who could go to such great calculative extents to achieve most of his plots in the movie as someone who after everything would keep the tape. Nah! it just doesn't work for me. You mean to tell me he went to all that extent after discovering the lover still sent a copy of the tape to his wife, rushes home, is able to get the tape, the one thing that could finish him and decides to keep it? Even more so having his wedding anniversary as the numbers to the safe? Come on!
Then again the movie had to end at some point i guess…and good just has to prevail. Guess that’s why its called fiction. All in all, i still think its a great movie just wish there had been a deeper plot to have put such a great mastermind as the character of the husband away, not a slip like this. He was too smart for this.
