Why Netflix will win in Nigeria and iRoko will NOT lose.

First off $10 is affordable, even in a shitty economy, what isn’t cheap is 10k for data. In that regard 12k for data ain’t all that bad or even 16k if it comes with unlimited streaming of Netflix, and not scamtisalat’s 400 for 2 hours Dasuki data bundle, sponsored by DSS of course. If you bundle them, they will come.

Secondly Netflix doesn’t care about Nigeria as much as Nigerians want to care for Netflix. They launched in 129 more countries, so no special Africa rollout, hell no hype sef just simple inclusion in the list. Nothing to see here, moving on.

The third, iRoko cares about Nigerians more than we want to care for it. Curated catalog list, check. Original content creation and deep industry links, betcha. Nollywood … Need I say more.

The real milestone of Nigeria’s inclusion in the netlist is the inane geo segmentation placed on services due to limiting contracts signed with content owners. Green is green anywhere and if I can afford it I shouldn’t have to VPN and Google Voice/Hangout my PayPal to enable me pay for Spotify, hell I still can’t watch some sport videos on yahoo cause of geo fencing while it is freely available everywhere else.

So take a moment to put down your ice bucket and enjoy what this could potentially usher in, truly global services without exclusion.
