During her press circuit for The Big Sick, actress Zoe Kazan dropped by Off Camera, a YouTube interview series. Eloquent and well-read as always, Kazan brings a Picasso quote (“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child”) into casual conversation like we should all be reading ten books at once. “I feel younger now than I did ten years ago,” she begins, explaining how as a teenager and a twentysomething she “suddenly felt the burden of having to be an adult.” Kazan goes on to explain how this feeling was more an abstract idea involving responsibility and independency than a real, tangible goal to be achieved. But before Kazan can continue, host Sam Jones (whoever that is) interrupts her with a terrible start to a sentence: “And as a woman…”

Kazan then shoots him a look of total disdain.

“And as a woman…” turns into a brief explanation that a woman in her twenties will eventually realize that she is “prey,” as host Sam Jones, a definite dude, puts it with a sad expression on his face. Kazan agrees but elaborates that she felt that dreadful feeling very young. At age two, in fact. Sam Jones rightfully backs off and understands that his interview got a little derailed by a stupid comment. Thankfully, Kazan circles back to the toughness she spoke of earlier, proving her independence in the process.

Zoe Kazan’s new movie, The Big Sick, is out now in select theaters. Its praise is pretty through-the-roof, if you ask the internet.
