In Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul., we meet Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), a megachurch pastor who has fallen from grace in the community after a scandal. His wife, First Lady Trinitie Childs (Regina Hall), has stood by him and is trying to help him get ready to reopen their church on Easter Sunday.

I had a really good time with this film. It’s a witty and scathing look at modern-day American Christianity. Many little details were included that are absolutely real in American evangelicalism today, like the thrones on the stage, the extensive wardrobes (and shoes), and the suit of armor next to the pulpit. The name of their church was also perfect: Wander to Greater Paths Baptist Church. You can’t get much better than that.

I love that Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. isn’t afraid of pointing out some of the damaging elements that can be found in many megachurches throughout the U.S. At the beginning of the film, Lee-Curtis spends time describing how they removed decons from their structure after the scandal. He claims this was an inspired move, but it also means that he has no accountability structure for how he’s leading his church. This was a brief moment, but it rings all too true for many disgraced pastors who…
