The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (in addition to having a name that’s much too long) introduces us to a ragtag group tasked with an impossible mission to help England turn the tide against the Germans in World War II.

This movie is so much fun! The dialogue is witty, the characters charismatic, and the action is exciting. Honestly, it’s all the fun that you would expect from a movie written and directed by Guy Ritchie.

There is a beautiful blend of humor all throughout this film. In one of my favorite moments, Gus (Henry Cavill) is being informed of the impossible mission he’s being asked to accomplish. Brigadier Gubbins ‘M’ (Cary Elwes) is trying to explain the mission in all of its seriousness, and Gus is just being himself. He goes about the room, stealing cigars, matches, and even a lighter, while M just rolls his eyes and continues his speech.

Silly moments like this are scattered all throughout the film and are a wonderful counterbalance to the seriousness of the mission our heroes are on. A great illustration of this is when they are gearing up to rescue one of their members who is being tortured on a Nazi-occupied island. As they are preparing for a dangerous fight, Gus tells his men, “Try to have fun.” And they do…
