Being a vampire isn’t as glamorous as the movies might have you believe. What We Do in the Shadows takes us into the lives of a group of vampire friends as they navigate the mundane parts of life.

This film is such a fun take on the vampire genre. A lot of vampire content is either straight-up horror or infuses a romantic element to the undead (or combines the two). What We Do in the Shadows takes a different route entirely, relying on the mockumentary format.

The film opens with Viago (Taika Waititi) calling his roommates and fellow vampires together for a house meeting. He goes from room to room, waking everyone up and introducing us to each vampire as we go. At times, What We Do in the Shadows feels more like reality TV than a documentary, which adds another hilarious aspect to this film. It’s funny to think about what The Real World would be like but with vampires instead of humans. And this film effectively captures that.

We see the roommates discussing their various household responsibilities (complete with a chore wheel), getting ready for a night out, and having friends over for a dinner party. Having this camera crew follow them around as they go about their daily lives makes you feel like you’re just hanging out with these really weird…
