Numerous films are adapted from inspirational authors, whose books are great enough for the big screen. But who are these authors? What’s their backstory? Below, you may learn a thing or two about a few of our favorite book to movie adaptations.

Harry Potter Series

Most of us have read all the Harry Potter books, or at least the first. J.K. Rowling is such a talented writer, we truly hope she continues her career. Until then, we’ll continue rewatching and rereading about the striking Harry Potter!

Did you know Rowling was rejected by 8 different publishers before Bloomsbury accepted Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone? Writers, don’t give up!

Fight Club

Chuck Palahniuk’s book, Fight Club, was published in 1996. It only took 3 years until director David Fincher adapted his book and turned it into a fantastic film.

Did you know Fight Club 2, released in 2015, as a comic book? Let us know if you’ve read it in the comments!

Holes

A childhood favorite, Holes, is written by Louis Sachar. This novel won the U.S. National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the Newbery Medal. What an honor Sachar has of Walt Disney Pictures adapting his book, into the wonderful movie we love today.

Did you know Holes has 2 sequels? Stanley Yelnates’ Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake and Small Steps. Let us know if you’ve read either and if they’re any good!

Matilda

Matilda was written by Roald Dahl and published in 1988. Then turned into a film in 1996 directed by Danny DeVito. We’re very happy Dahl put forth his efforts to create such an enticing book. I mean really, who wasn’t afraid of Miss Trunchbull? We sure were! But Dahl knew this and created Miss Honey to even out the evil.

Did you know Matilda is full of intertextuality? She has read Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, The Grapes of Wrath, Moby Dick and lots more. You’re a genius Dahl!

The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby in 1925. Years later it was turned into the film we love. Even though we think Gatsby is a bit too crazy in love, we still admire his never ending confidence and determination.

Did you know Sara Benincasa wrote a novel called Great in 2014; her novel is a retelling with a woman Gatsby?
