Chris Doyle is a multi-media artist of ingenuity and bold originality known for making art on an urban scale. His vivid repertoire is sleek and smart, alluring and provocative. In its investigation of landscape and culture, his work is a convergence of nature, technology and the human spirit.

In The Labyrinth, Chris Doyle’s exclusive piece for Depict Frame, features a stylized natural world that reveals his training as both painter and architect. With dazzling imagery, Doyle explores the power of landscape in the expression of our collective fears, anxieties, and aspirations.

“One of the things that is really important to me to is to find moments, or find opportunities, that allow within them a certain amount of experimentation.”

“I spend a lot of time looking at other art and so a lot of times things that I bring to my work are references to other art: either historical, current, or you can be inspired by just walking down the street and seeing something quirky on the sidewalk.”

“It is not unusual at all that what begins as a watercolor image can then be rethought as a sculpture, or even as a 3-D modeled world. Each set of tools teases out very different aspects of what I am trying to get at.”

“A few years ago, I started making a series of pieces that dealt with the
power of landscape.

While our understanding of landscape is always framed by a particular cultural perspective, the visceral experience of the land serves as a connective tissue between us.”

In The Labyrinth explores the way landscape can contain and express our collective fears, anxieties and aspirations. It weaves together a thread of apocalyptic environmental concern with one of the building desire for a more lavish and pleasurable experience.”

“You are actually in a space with a work of art and
you have a visceral reaction to it that is a combination of all the senses.
It is more than the sum of any one part of it.”
