It all happened quite quickly.

My sister brought to Melbourne, Australia, a VHS tape cassette.

Within a manilla cover, no branding, a neat title printed MATRIX.

The Matrix theatre release in Australia was edging closer. However, I couldn’t wait. Watch The Matrix on the big screen or watch it on my TV, which was two meters in front of me.

The thought didn’t have time to sink in.

All I could hear is the robotic claws of the VHS recorder eat The Matrix VHS tape cassette.

Already peaking with excitement, I hit play.

Sitting down, legs crossed on the carpet, I was ready.

Before IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes

Whispers of a brilliant cinematic story about the internet intrigued me. How can a film portray the infinite internet, and deserve such praise? As a geek, I love the internet. Doubt passed over me. The Matrix could be another failed attempt to characterize the vast potential of the internet. Like The Net with Sandra Bullock, will the Matrix scare audiences, coding a deep fear of the internet of things (IoT) into people!?

Nope.

Two and a half hours passed and it was close to 1 am.

I could hardly sleep that night. The next day I watched The Matrix again. I never had in my life, and still to this day, watched a film twice within 24 hours. The excitement still lingers in my memory, the possibilities, the imagination, the action, and of course, the Story.

And then I realized The Matrix is about Jesus.

What follows are seven ideas that connect the story to the Bible.

You will never see The Matrix the same way again:

#1 Neo is an anagram for the One

Throughout the film, Morpheus references Neo as the savior. Neo is to save them from the wicked ways of the machines. Jesus is pronounced 2324 times as the savior in the Bible.

2. Sentinels are roman soldiers in the Bible

Referenced in The Song of Solomon there is a series of lyrical poems about a young woman and her lover. She searches for her lover in these poems. Trinity, of course, looks for and finds Neo.

See references of ‘Sentinels’ in the Bible.

3. Zion is a city in the Bible

Zion appears in the Old Testament 152 times as a title for Jerusalem.

It is the place where Yahweh, the God of Israel, dwells

— Isaiah 8:18; Psalm 74:2

Don’t believe me, neither do I. If your eyes have fell out of their sockets in disbelief, here are references of Zion: Britannica — Zion

Zion in The Matrix is where the only humans left, live on planet earth. Yes, they are way cooler due to their drum-pounding feet, sustainable, fashionable clothing, and upbeat dance moves.

4. Neo is betrayed by one of his own

Just as Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus.

This clip of Cypher (born Reagan) shows him betraying Neo.

5. In Babylon’s famous accounts in the Bible, a King of the Neo-Babylonian period, Nebuchadnezzar II reigned from 605 to 562 B.C.

Morpheus captains their ship called the Nebuchadnezzar.

In Babylon's famous accounts in the Bible, a King of the Neo-Babylonian period, Nebuchadnezzar II reigned from 605 to 562 B.C.

The King Nebuchadnezzar II in the Bible was in charge of the mass deportation of its citizens. In The Matrix, Morpheus is known for waking people up, extracting them from The Matrix to find the one, Neo.

6. Jesus dies for his people

Neo dies, once he stays back to fight the Sentinels as Morpheus and his crew escape.

7. Jesus is resurrected

No surprise here, as Neo comes back from death also.

There are many other subtle hints to the Bible in The Matrix, the clip below points to the number 303 on the door, just before Agent Smith shoots Neo.

Is it possible that the Wachowskis merged one of the greatest stories ever written, the Bible, and merged it with science fiction?

You decide.
