In today’s corporate world, most are highly qualified, with post-graduate qualifications becoming very common. This is mainly because many tend to pursue higher education, enabled with the improvement of technology and equality of opportunities across the globe. With an abundance of highly qualified candidates, your qualifications alone will not make you stand out in the job arena. The way to highlight yourself is to create a good image among the professional workforce.

LinkedIn is one of the main platforms for professionals for knowledge sharing and building connections. In any industry what matters the most is the connections that you have built up. Though qualifications would give the start, connections would take you a long way.

LinkedIn is a great platform to showcase your profile and publicize it among the corporate world. Therefore, it’s very important for you to have a complete and accurate profile on LinkedIn. The following 14 tips will help you improve your LinkedIn profile to maximize your presence on the network.

  • First and foremost update the profile with the latest information.
  • Add a proper profile picture. Select a professional photo, which reflects the impression you want to convert to a recruiter.
  • Add a good headline instead of the default headline. This is what will be shown to anyone before visiting the profile. So make sure it sums up your capabilities and is catchy.
  • Get LinkedIn Premium if possible; they offer a 30 day trial period, where you can see if it interests you. It does have many benefits in the long run, but at least in the trial period, you can make the most of it.
  • Add more relevant (same industry) contacts to the profile. This will also help you to see more relevant articles on your newsfeed, allowing you to interact with them often.
  • Write an eye-catching statement for the About segment. Include a short and interesting summary of yourself; who you are, what you can do and why someone should be interested in reaching out to you. Check out this interesting post on improving your Profile Summary.
  • Regularly post content and be active.

-One way is to create your articles on trending topics and get people involved in discussions.

-Reshare valuable articles and tag the original author in it. Do add your thoughts regarding the article.

  • Tag your best Articles and posts in the Featured segment in LinkedIn. This would be visible for anyone visiting your profile.
  • Add all your Educational qualifications and the Certifications. This will help your connections to validate your qualifications.
  • Include a complete track of your past work experiences. Not just the company, tenure and the position held, try to include a summary of your responsibilities as well.
  • Try to do Certifications via online platforms like Coursera, Udemy, Pluralsight and LinkedIn Learning (This is another advantage of LinkedIn Premium). Add those to the profile. (Most are free of charge or very much worth the money and can be completed in a short period).

  • Add the best skills you have and get them endorsed by colleagues. Make sure these skills are relevant to your career. These skills will also be used when LinkedIn suggest job opportunities for you and will help you stand out when applying for jobs via LinkedIn.
  • Try to get recommendations to the profile by colleagues, subordinates, peers and others. This will have a significant effect, as another person’s impression of you would be less biased than yours 😉
  • Last but not least, make sure there are no typos. One thing that will discourage a potential employer is grammar and spelling mistakes on your profile. Use a tool like Grammarly to improve your writing.

These tips will help you boost up your LinkedIn profile and help get a greater presence on the network. A complete LinkedIn profile will give a potential employer more information on your capabilities, thus encouraging them to reach out for you.

Being more active and contributing to LinkedIn will highlight your profile, and help you to appear on the news feed often. Following this approach slowly and steadily would improve your corporate presence, grow the connections and will open up new opportunities to improve your career.
