CRS Score is the utmost important factor, which should be considered when applying for Canadian Permanent Residency. When applying for Federal Skilled Worker as per the current draws, you should have a score of at least 465 or above.

You can check your CRS Score from the CRS Score Calculator.

There are several factors which determine the CRS Score

  • Education Qualifications — up to 150 points
  • Work Experience- up to 100 points
  • IELTS Marks
  • Age — 110 for a single applicant and 100 for married applicant below 30 years

The above mentioned are some of the main factors which will directly influence the CRS Score.

IELTS

If you are planning to increase the CRS Score immediately, the only way would be scoring great marks in IELTS. This will be the only factor which we have control of. Even a small increase in the IELTS score will drastically increase the CRS Score.

If its impossible to reach a CRS Score around 465, even after getting the best marks for IELTS you would have to look for other alternatives to increase the CRS Score.

The overall score of IELTS is matched against the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) as follows

Let’s consider 2 instances to see how the CLB level affects the CRS score

As can be seen above, your IELTS score could be the factor that decides your eligibility for the Canadian PR.

Educational Qualifications

If you are still in the early 20s, the best way would be to improve your educational qualifications which will have a great impact on the CRS score. If you have a Bachelor qualification, the best way would be to follow a Masters program which will have a great impact on the scores. Though it might take the time, it would be the best approach going forward. On the other hand, if you are pursuing some higher qualification and is below 30 years of age, it will be advisable to finish the qualification before applying. This is a call that you will have to make.

There might be consultants offering different methods to go ahead which might be both ethical and unethical. But as we see, finishing the Master’s qualification and applying, later on, would be the best. This would not only help you to increase your CRS but it will help to enhance the knowledge and portfolio as well.

Work Experience

Work Experience is another main factor which would increase the CRS score. If you have foreign work experience for less than 3 years, it would be best for you to complete 3 years before applying. This way, you will be able to score full points under Foreign work experience category.

There is a misconception among most of the people that the applicant should have 3 years of work experience at the same organization. This is not correct. The IRCC asks for only 1 year of work experience at 1 organization continuously, and 3 years of work experience in total to score the maximum points for work experience. The remaining years (apart from the one year at a single organization) can be spread across multiple organizations.

If you have Canadian work experience, the points accumulated would be higher. You can claim points up to 5 years, with a maximum of 80 points.

Age

Age is another crucial factor which directly impacts the CRS Score. After you are 30+, for each year, 5 points will be deducted from the CRS Score. So its always better to apply before 30 years which would not make any impact.

Some additional ways to increase the score is to claim points for the following.

Relatives in Canada — A sibling who is a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident will boost your CRS score by 15 points. You will need to provide some proof of the relationship if you claim these points.

Secondary Language — You can take French as a secondary language which could increase the CRS by a maximum of 54 points. You will have to pass TEF or TCF exams.

Canadian Job Offer — The hardest to come by would be a valid Canadian job offer, which would increase your CRS Score by 50 points. In case of a senior managerial position, the CRS Score could even increase by 200 points. For this, you will need to provide a valid job offer letter from the company in Canada.

As you can see, though there are several factors which directly impacts the CRS Score, only the IELTS score can be controlled within a short period of time. Next, you can also look into completing any ongoing educational qualifications and completing 3 years of work experience that will add up more points.

Try to enhance your educational qualifications as soon as possible and do your best in IELTS to get the maximum marks if you are planning to apply to Canada under the Express Entry Federal Skilled Worker.
