MozFest is a convening point and fueling station for a dynamic, global movement for a better, healthier internet. This year, among our hundreds of offerings are sessions by and for activists and organisers. Join us to brush up on critical skills in movement building, and get a glimpse of how emerging tech like AI might transform — for better and/or worse — activism and organising practice. Here are seven great sessions for activists from our jam-packed schedule.

Don’t miss MozFest 2019, get your tickets now!

Movement Building for Internet Health with Abby Cabunoc-Mayes / @abbycabs / Mozilla (Wednesday at MozFest House*) Welcome community organizers & internet health friends! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to use the principles of open leadership and movement building to mobilize your community around a healthier internet.

Queer engagement lab (Thursday at MozFest House*)The Queer Engagement Lab (QEL) is an open dialogue space about the implications of AI, how can we address the challenges that machine learning and other technological developments represent for LGBTQI+, and how can the internet become a tool for collective liberation.

The Extinction Rebellion Self-Organising System with XR UK team members (in the MoZone, MozFest weekend) Get a crash course in the principles and tools of Extinction Rebellion’s decentralised, participatory, inclusive Self-Organising System; discuss your own organising experiences to discover how these new principles might apply to your community and the internet health movement.

Sorry, I am not programmed to understand what you are saying with Anna Iosif / @Angamanga/ Ushahidi (in the Digital Inclusion Space, MozFest weekend) Learn how a chatbot was deployed during the last Kenyan elections to help people submit reports of violence and misconduct experienced in the polling stations; discuss best practices in using this technology to improve community resilience, and collaborate on a script for a new chatbot for reporting Code of Conduct violations.

Is your assembly managed by an algorithm? with Vanja Skoric / @vanjasko / European Center for Not-for-Profit Law (in the Openness Space, MozFest weekend) How are AI based systems affecting our individual and collective freedom to assemble, either in person or online? Explore examples, such as algorithmic systems for online content moderation, or the use of predictive policing software and facial recognition technology to monitor, preempt, and disrupt protests. Consider how technology is impacting every phase of organising; help recommend actions to safeguard the right to free expression and assembly.

I Wish You The Beauty of Storm: Against Online Gender Violence with Alexandra Argüelles / @KafSofit / Derechos Digitales (in the Queering Space, MozFest weekend) What are the joys and challenges of expressing our identities online, as communities and individuals? How can we promote free and safe spaces online, facing the sophisticated ways in which data collection targets and exploits our identities? Discover an evolving process called called “La Tormenta” (The Storm). In Mexico City in 2018 La Torementa brought together women journalists and human rights activists (with minimal tech skills) with women from feminist tech communities to explore these critical questions.

Shapeshifters of the web, unite! Become a cyborg RPG fighter With Belén Roca / @leene / Digital Witchcraft (in the Queering Space, MozFest weekend) Take Dungeons & Dragons to the next level and see what happens when the massively multiplayer online role-playing game experience is recreated in the MozFest context, from a queer perspective! Travel beyond the modern prisons of data-mining social networks, political borders and bodies themselves in our game of “Devices & Cyborgs.” Create your own character and embark on a quest to build an emancipatory internet based on principles such as openness, privacy, interoperability and feminism.
