In the run-up to the 2019 Festival, we’ll be chatting with our Space Wranglers, the community volunteers who shape each year’s Festival narrative curate our amazing program of sessions at MozFest weekend. This week we’re getting to know Alia ElKattan, wrangler in the Decentralisation Space.

What is your current favorite song, and why? Don’t Panic by Coldplay or Soldier of Hope by Roo Panes; I like reminders to seek out hope & positivity when the world seems tough!

What draws you to MozFest? I love what the Mozilla community believes the internet can and should be, and want to be a part of striving towards that vision.

What unique perspectives do you bring to space wrangling? I’ve always been very invested in both technology and social justice/equity, and want to explore how we can build technical spaces and platforms that mirror and respect the values we want to uphold for our societies at large.

What are you most looking forward to about your space this year? Looking forward to reuniting with the MozFest team months after our Barcelona retreat, meeting facilitators and attendees who care about similar issues and hearing their perspectives, and seeing how the physical design of our Decentralization space will evolve over the coming months!

What link or resource would you like to share? My team’s project for the Mozilla Creative Media Awards, Survival of the Best Fit, recently went live at survivalofthebestfit.com. It’s an interactive explainer on how software could be biased.

Join Alia at MozFest! Check out the Decentralisation space, and submit your session idea today! Our Call for Proposals closes August 1.
