The Youth Zone is a pillar of participatory engagement at MozFest. Young people and those who support them are always excited to build a healthier Internet that empowers them to solve shared problems and achieve their dreams. Young people see a future that defies expectations and promises them more inclusion, agency, and shared ownership online. The Youth Zone is a place where youth and their allies come together to share ideas and make the Internet healthier for all.

This year, to amplify young people’s ideas and highlight their contributions to the festival, we’re integrating the Youth Zone experience with the other spaces at MozFest in new ways. We’re building relationships with the other spaces to make sure that:

  • Young people find their ways into conversations and projects about the things they care about across the festival.
  • Young people’s allies visit the Youth Zone and immerse themselves in youth perspectives on data, AI, Internet health, and how to make all of those things better, safer, and more inclusive.

How will this integration look? We’re figuring that out right now. We might develop passports young people can take with them from floor to floor and session to session to document their contributions to our shared community. We might host youth-led AMAs with young facilitators or invite participants in the speaker series to the floor for youth-facing Q&A sessions. We’re eager to hear your ideas, as well: how might we better connect the Youth Zone with your favorite parts of MozFest?

Given the need to take special care with young people’s data, we’re also very interested in this year’s Mozfest theme, Your Data & You.

  • If you have a proposal for a youth-led or youth-facing session that highlights and addresses challenges young people face in responsibly collecting, using, and safeguarding data, please submit your idea here.
  • If you’ve already submitted a proposal, consider telling us more about how your idea connects to this theme and will help young people imagine and create a better future for themselves and their personal data. You can edit or comment on your proposal in GitHub.

You might also tell us how your session connects to another floor or space at the festival and how it might draw in allied audiences to learn about young people’s takes on Internet health issues.

The deadline for MozFest submissions is August 1st, 2018, so please submit sooner rather than later! We’ll be reviewing proposals this month and next before confirming our session selections in September.

We look forward to seeing you at MozFest — in the Youth Zone and beyond!
