Between the World and Me

The speaker of the poem “Between the World and Me,” is an African American man who was a communists at the time which inspired him to write. He wrote this poem in 1935. The speaker uses sight to show the impossibility of ignorance, it is basically about lynching. As the setting slowly comes together, the narrator finally realizes that he is the victim and that he is first watching and then reliving his won horrific death . The words “world and me” from the title influences some genres in African American thought and expression. Black intellectuals attempt to live the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice during this time.
