Food is the Key to Preventing Food Allergies in Children?
Food allergies are becoming more and more common all around the world. Is there a way to prevent them? Possibly. Researchers at Kings College London have conducted tests to prevent food allergies using food. This idea was derived from early exposure enabling a child’s immune system to recognize and tolerate the allergens.
The six common food allergens are peanuts, egg, milk, fish, wheat, and sesame. Studies have shown that infants, from three months of age, who were exposed early to these allergens resulted in a 20 percent reduction.
In addition to the six common food allergens, tree nuts such as almonds, pictured, walnuts, and pecans are also a source of allergic reactions. Even a minimal amount is enough to be lethal to some individuals. Another frequent source of allergic reactions are shellfish, which include crab, lobster, and shrimp. Wheat is a major food allergen because it is an ingredient found in many foods, ranging from breads, cereals, and flours to some beverages.
Allergic reactions include hives, rashes, vomiting, and swelling. People with food allergies should always read labels carefully. The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act only identifies eight allergens, but more than 160 foods are known to cause allergies.
