A woman was attacked in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood Sunday after she mistook a vehicle for a ride-booking service car.

Police said, A 22 year old woman was viciously attacked in her ride after leaving a nightclub at 1:10 a.m. on Sunday, March 6 near Fifth and Natoma street. The woman said she mistook the ride that she ordered on her smartphone and unwittingly got into the stranger’s car.

The driver, a man authorities described as roughly 60 years old, drove two blocks, stopped the car, turned around and began punching the woman in the face and arms. The man then tried to climb into the backseat with her but the woman began kicking him and ultimately escaped and called for help. While the woman was calling police, the kidnapper drove off. He has not been identified or arrested in the attack.

This incident raises questions whether ride apps like Uber or Lyft should be trusted. Uber says they make about 1 million rides per day. So what are the chances that this could happen again or if someone was unable to escape? What can these apps do to improve the safety precautions of customers?
