red lights district

The Netherlands seem to be the land of freedom. Cannabis muffins, red lights district and lgbt-weddings — everything is legal and available to every person of age. Would be a great place for gambling?

Not so fast!

Gambling industry in the Netherlands is strictly regulated by the organisation called Kansspelautoriteit, and all the casinos’ profit goes directly to the Dutch treasury. All the casinos belong to Holland Casino — a state-owned company that has the legal monopoly on gambling.

The total turnover of the legal gambling sector is more than €2 billion. Almost €500 million is transferred to charities; the same amount goes to the Treasury.

If we move directly to land-based casinos, we’ll find 14 casinos (yes, all under Holland Casino monopoly) operating in 14 cities — thus every city has one gambling hub.

The Dutch adore poker — local as well as international poker tournaments are regularly held in the country’s casinos. Are you 18 and more? Smartly dressed? Ready to pay entrance fee of €4? Join the club, dear!

Hey, what about online gambling? Well, here’s a problem — online casinos are forbidden in the Netherlands.

So take you get your smokings and cocktail dresses ready if you go for a casino tour to the land of tulips!
