Many readers check the number of claps before reading an article, because in most people’s minds, a large number of claps automatically means correct and quality information.
Just as it happens on Facebook where a person who has a lot of likes is attractive to an even larger number of people, so it happens on Medium with claps.

In this article I will tell you what is my opinion about the number of claps and why I think it is not an indicator of quality.
In the 4 years that I have been writing on Medium, the articles in which I have exposed a personal opinion, have generally had a very large number of claps, but this does not necessarily mean that I have necessarily offered quality information but rather that I have created the environment for a debate between people.

There have been many articles where people, even though they disagreed with me, chose to click on the claps because they wanted their opinion to be taken into account and to receive a response from me.
In addition there are very many people who read the article, agree and even leave a personal opinion either not leaving a claps or leaving a small number of claps (5 out of 50 possible for example).
