Heatwave Closes Sakchi Market, and the Schools

When talking about the weather isn’t an icebreaker — there’s no ice to break!

In my twenty-four years in Tatanagar, this is the first time they have closed down Sakchi market for a heatwave.

I wrote about Sakchi market in my story, The Bazaars of Tatanagar. It is an open shed market and exposed to the elements.

They closed Sakchi market down today for two days because of the heatwave, to discourage people from going to the market and to prevent the shopkeepers from opening up shop in the afternoon heat.

Temperatures for the week, that closed down the schools

107°F, 109, 104, 106, 101, 98, 95 — 95 is next Wednesday when the schools reopen, because they’re closed now for the heatwave.

ACs work only when there are just 6 people to a room

On Monday evening, there were about twenty people in our dental clinic’s waiting room. The temperature on the window air conditioner there, which was set at a cool 22°C (71°F) started to tick up…
