Lantern fly scientific name is lycorma delicatula.

I noticed these creatures are rapidly spreading across our area in Queens for two consecutive summers.

And now they multiplied more and seems infestation is getting worse. It’s very alarming walking. On the street with these pests and sometimes jumping on your feet and pants.

It can associates with more than 173 plants according to Wikipedia. It doesn’t bite or sting humans but a big concern for farmers.

It was first detected In Pennsylvania, through goods shipped from Asia to US.

Now, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the States mostly affected by these creatures.

Originally these communist illegal aliens came from China and Vietnam. And spread through out Japan, south Korea and now here in United States of A.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation gave warning since June about the influx of these spotted lantern flies. And asked the help of locals to kill it, since it’s hard to control and it’s too invasive.

Lantern flies loves to eat crops. And can totally destroy million of dollars of farmers crops, woody trees, plants and fruits like apples and grapes.

The reason authorities asked people to kill it immediately when they saw it. But they are very fast and smart ass. They hide in crevices and corners to save themselves from the wrath of New Yorkers.

These plant hoppers are flying everywhere along Queens Boulevard. Many are dead, suffered a hard blow from humans. Sorry that we can’t do this to corrupt and incompetent politicians. But of course that is another story.

It leaves excrement sticky substance, that has sweet smell called honeydew. That can attract more fungus and infect trees and plants. And its eggs can survive winters. Their life span is about one year, then they will die.

I looked like a dang idiot, stomping it right to the left, side ways, right foot, left foot. STOMP! STOMP! It’s like i’m dancing in a Zumba class while heading to my part time work. I think farmers should thank me for this.

According to some experts, the best solution to kill it in almost instantly is vinegar.

So if you are a Buddhist who avoid killing bugs, i hope this is an exemption. Because we want to support local farmers to protect their crops, and of course protect our trees to fight climate change.
