Challenge: Design Your Own Sneaker
In this lesson, students will solve a real-world word problem using a division strategy of their choice: partial quotients or long division. Then, working in teams of 2–3, they will design their own sneaker using Nike By You.
Challenge Part 1 [Must-Do]
Designers at Nike are creating the company’s next limited-release shoe model. Their goal is to sell 650 pairs of shoes in 5 weeks.
How many pairs must they sell each week (assuming they sell the same amount each week) to reach their goal?
Challenge Part 2 [Can-Do]
Working in teams of 2–3, you will design your own shoe using Nike By You. Be prepared to share your design with the class.
4.NBT.B.6 — Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
