Technology you ought to know this Christmas

Well, 2021 definitely did not go as planned, and once again we spent the majority of our time working from home. However, this did not stop the technological advancements in the world and people came up with neat technologies with great utility. Here are the top 5 techs you must know about.

1.OrCam Read — Making Text Audible

OrCam Read

Reading can be a serious challenge for tens of millions of people, whether they struggle with comprehension difficulties, poor vision, dyslexia, or other issues. But using computer vision and artificial intelligence, the OrCam Read can read any piece of text aloud. Users target the device’s laser frame at a page of a book, a menu, an advertisement, or a screen displaying text, press a button, and the device instantly vocalizes it, in a voice that sounds remarkably natural. It can also read the text in multiple languages. Since the device can respond to voice commands, you can ask it to read, say, a phone number from an ad, the operating hours of a business, or even your favourite story.

2. Nike GO FlyEase — The Hands-Free Shoe

Nike GO Fly Ease

The ability to tie our shoes may be something most people take for granted, but for many of us, lacing up can be a real pain. Nike aims to fix that problem with the GO FlyEase, a shoe that wearers with disabilities can slip on and off, hands-free. A hinge in the middle allows the shoe to bend open, while a midsole tensioner band, crafted from surgical tubing, snaps it back into place. The shoe could help people with a wide range of conditions, from flexibility issues and arthritis to visual impairments. “The human experience is vast and broad — why aren’t we providing solutions that help people dress independently?” asks Sarah Reinertsen, a Paralympic athlete and member of Nike’s innovation team who worked on prototypes of the shoe.

3. Lenovo ThinkReality A3 Smart Glasses — Five Screens At a Time

When you sit down at your desk sometime in the near future, instead of turning on a monitor or opening your laptop, you may simply wear a pair of Lenovo’s ThinkReality A3 Smart Glasses. Connect the glasses to a computer or smartphone, and high-definition displays built into the lenses will show as many as five different virtual desktops. As you move your head to view the different desktops floating in front of you, you can continue multitasking between Excel spreadsheets or Word documents as you normally would using a standard keyboard, trackpad or mouse, all while streaming a Spotify playlist through the headset’s built-in speakers.

4. Neeva — Private, Ad-Free Search

Neeva

Search engines like Google and Bing claim to be free, but users pay by surrendering their data. Surely you’ve noticed that ads for a product you recently researched magically begin appearing on every website you subsequently visit. Neeva wants to change that, offering a totally ad-free and private search experience. Developed by a team of former Google employees, Neeva offers apps for Android, iPhone, and iPad, and extensions for browsers. Since launching in June, it has garnered loads of positive reviews.

5. Framework Laptop — A Notebook you can repair

Framework Laptop

Framework’s breakthrough isn’t the usual whiz-bang technology that makes older laptops obsolete. On the contrary, it is that customers can swap out the battery, keyboard, and other parts to repair or upgrade them, making the sleek machine more immune to tech’s relentless churn. Framework CEO Nirav Patel, who once developed software at Apple, figures people want an alternative to “products that are glued together, sealed up and soldered down, designed to be disposable.” It is estimated that we could save over $80 billion annually by repairing rather than replacing electronics. There’s a green impact, too, in sending fewer machines and their toxic chemicals to landfills.

These are some of the amazing techs that hit the markets this year and are receiving great responses from the public. I urge the readers of this blog to also indulge in innovation and be the producer of something worthwhile instead of just being a consumer.

Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!
