Appearance Vs. Reality

The world through Dayanara Calderon Rosario’s eyes

--

While the name Dayanara holds much authority and means “slayer of men” in Greek, this definition does not stand true for Dayanara Calderon Rosario.

As a student now living in Paterson, New Jersey, Rosario is better known for being tender, caring, and politically aware.

Although shy when first encountered, the fire in her blazes when discussing her greatest influences and women leaders like the competent Michelle Obama, the resourceful Oprah Winfrey, and the iconic Beyoncé.

Dayanara Calderon is not a “slayer of men.”

“There should definitely be more female representatives in the government because men are trying to put laws and restrictions on things they cannot possibly understand,” Rosario said.

Rosario comes from a family which she described to be traditional Dominicans. The 15-year-old aspiring journalist is constantly being pushed to be the best version of herself by them. This undoubtedly helps in setting the expectations in the competitive field of journalism.

She is the youngest out of her siblings and lives with her mother and brother. Her love for her siblings, which consists of three sisters and a brother, only grows by the day. Dayanara also mentioned that her grandmother’s wise words and work ethic caused her to view her as a role model.

The city that never sleeps seems to have impacted Rosario in a symbolic way. She indicated that her most unforgettable moment was when she saw New York City for the first time, especially since it was with her father. She is pleased to have been able to share that emotional connection and experience with him since she does not get to see him so often because he lives in another state.

Although she is an introvert, Rosario enjoys the presence of her friends. She believes that they have played a great role in developing her understanding of compassion, loyalty, and social skills. Rosario’s sympathetic and caring ways had lead others to seek out her guidance.

“My friends usually come to me for relationship, school, and life advice or if they just need someone to listen to them,” she said.

Rosario’s initial reserved attitude and the fierce definition of her name contradicts the true nature of her being. Her unique upbringing has made her a compassionate person who constantly looks for ways to change the world around her.
