Ask Tiffannie Coy what she thinks, and she’ll tell you. The 17-year old is candid and outspoken, especially about her career choice. She wants to be original in everything she does, especially in journalism.

Coy is an aspiring fashion journalist from Newark, New Jersey, who seeks to be the only boss she has to report to. Individualism to her, is to freely do what one wants.

The strong-willed teen practices what she preaches by being a freelance journalist for nursing companies, local students and teachers. This is Coy’s way of taking control of her life, and using writing as a way to stand out from the crowd.

Even though Coy has found her niche in freelancing, she too faces obstacles where she must sacrifice her voice and pride when writing for other people.

She recalls a time when someone commissioned her to write an article, about an exam for registering nurses, on how to get your scores quicker than usual. Coy wrote the article in about 2 days and really put her heart into it, but when the person read it, he had different feelings.

“When he saw it, he really hated it,’ says Coy. “He made me write it over for about three or four times, and that just shows the sacrifice one has to make as a journalist. You are willing to put so much of your effort and soul into something for someone, where they may not ever like it.”

Coy is pictured outside the School of Communications and Media News Lab.

Even after that experience, rather than letting it hinder her passion for writing, Coy uses it to her advantage by preparing herself for the cut-throat industry of journalism. And to not let the negativity faze her.

One of Coy’s inspirations is the iconic Anna Wintour, journalist and editor of the fashion bible, VOGUE magazine. Throughout the years, Wintour has garnered a reputation of being tough or “stone cold,” due to her outspokenness and passion for fashion. This is what encourages Coy to be herself whether people like it or not.

“I admire her business woman personality, and how they had to make a movie revolving around her life. To me that is kind of inspirational because she does run a multi-million dollar company, and… I really respect her work and dedication to what she loves to do, and not caring for what people may say about her individuality,” states Coy.

Whether Coy is working at a local news publication in Newark, or sitting front row at a Calvin Klein runway show during New York Fashion Week, her goal remains the same. She wants to spark a change in journalism so that future generations can be inspired, and let their originality shine.
