Starting college is a stressful time. There are many changes being made. Some are on their own for the first time, nobody is making you attend classes, and nobody is there to take care of you. The first semester is when cold and flu season are upon us and that can be hard to deal with having a newfound freedom. There is one specific illness, however, that is swept under the rug-mental illness. It can be hard to cope with mental illness if it is undiagnosed or untreated. Diagnosing can be difficult because you do not have a parent to tell you that you are acting funny. Treating can be even more difficult because it is expensive and time consuming. Knowing the resources that are available for you is the first step. These are some of the resources available on or close to MTSU.

  1. MTSU Counseling Services- MTSU offers free counseling on campus in the KUC in room 326-S. Appointments can be made by phone call or visiting the office and signing up with the receptionist. They provide screenings as well as self-assessment tests. This is an easy option as it is on campus so there is no driving distance, it is free, and all records are kept confidential. www.mtsu.edu/countest/assessment.php.

2. Volunteer Behavioral Health- This resource offers a number of services. Some of the services do not deal with mental illness so it can be convenient to come here for several different types of issues. Some examples of these are driving lessons, DUI school, and a treatment of sorts for sexual offenders. www.vbhcs.org/services/adult-services/.

3. Center for Human Development-This resource is the most specific. The only help offered is individualized therapy. They focus mainly on children and families, but this place is special because they have a specific program for people dealing with the hardships of homelessness. It is solely a place for people to get the counseling they need.

4. First Baptist Church-This is slightly different from the rest. First Baptist provides pastoral counseling rather than counseling with a psychologist or therapist. This option would be best for people who find comfort in the word of God.

5. Counseling Relationship Center- This option is also a tad different from the others. This is for people who are struggling with relationships. This does not have to be a romantic relationship. It can be with your parent or roommate. While this is a place mainly for relationship help, you can attend and still get help even if the other person does not agree to go. www.crcmurfreesboro.com/.

With the exception of First Baptist and MTSU counseling, all of them cost money. These places are all within a mile of MTSU. Regardless of the place chosen, a person can get the help they need. They provide a safe place to talk to a nonjudgmental person and get advice and treatment. Knowing your options is important to finding the right fit for you. Having a bond that is not forced with a therapist can be the difference in getting better and still feeling the same way.

The video attached goes hand in hand with this because of the different types of places listed.
