I will document active community members in the South of Market neighborhood who have been displaced because of the tech boom. They can no longer afford housing, vacation, and their dreams seem so far fetched that they cannot grasp it. These portraits will allow these people to live their fantasy for a short period of time. My intention with this project is still shifting however I intend to ignite the discussion around the exponential growth San Francisco is experiencing, specifically in the South of Market area and the ripple effects these rapid developments are creating throughout the community. I will document the space these people inhabit and have called home for many years, focusing on the depletion of certain sections of the neighborhood such as increased crime, eviction notices, empty lots, trash filled streets in contrast with these newly constructed high rise office buildings, renovated apartments, and fine dining. In addition to creating a topic of discussion of the physical changes SoMA is undergoing, I hope to capture willing community members in a state of uncertainty but also allow them to escape reality for a short period of time where they aren’t concerned with the depletion of their neighborhood they used to know. Not only do I want these images to be a backbone in a fight against gentrification but I want them to also create a sense of hope for those clinging onto what’s left of their rapidly evolving neighborhood.
