Photo series

Today in class we will critique your photo series. We’re not haters, so the point of this criticism is to make the projects better. Rather than simply passing judgment, we’ll attempt to explain what, precisely, should be improved, and how to do it.

A look ahead

On Thursday we’ll do our silent video exercise. There’s nothing you need to do to prepare, just come ready to work.

Then on Tuesday, your first video story will be due. It’s a profile of an interesting person, with the only requirement being that the subject be someone you don’t already have a relationship with. Remember to have an interview or two with people around the subject, so that we can see the subject from multiple perspectives.

Here’s a taste of video storytelling for you: two bad examples and a good one to go along with the good ones you found.

This is from the Hearst Awards. Students from across the country submit videos, and the best shooters are chosen to come to San Francisco for a four-day competition. They get their assignment Monday and turn in their finished video Thursday evening. I share this because it was created by a student like you on a short deadline.
