Opening those A-level results spells the end of an era and the beginning of an exciting new challenge. For many of the thousands of college students taking in their results today, the next step is UCAS, clearing, campus visits and interviews as the scramble for university places begins.

At Multiply HQ we got talking about what career or money advice we’d give to our younger selves if we could go back in time. Hello hindsight:

“If you’re not 100% sure about this, take a gap year.” — Annie M, Tone of Voice Lead

“Work experience, work experience, work experience. Long summer holidays are great, but experience in an industry you’re thinking of working in is better. It’ll give you a feel for what you do or definitely don’t want to do when you graduate.” — Jason D, Content and Community Lead

“Decisions aren’t as irreversible as they might seem.” — Rowan P, Head of Growth

“‘Follow your passion’ is toxic advice — follow your curiosities is a better one. Don’t get discouraged from things if you’re not good at them immediately” and “Most people are flying by the seat of their pants (trousers?) — developing an ability to think on your feet is greatly underrated.” — Bogdan, Growth Manager

“It’s not all about grades. Part-time work or volunteering, if you can do it, is a great way to build character and become a well-rounded person, and have experiences you wouldn’t get in education.” and “Don’t limit how you think about your future to the jobs that exist today. If you’re interested in something, immerse yourself in it. Today’s seed of curiosity could turn out to be a career in 10 years’ time.” — Annie S, Head of Product

“Don’t be afraid to explore the opportunities around you and to let yourself be interested in many things. When you’re young money will come and go and that its more important to build a healthy outlook on your finances than to save every penny/work 70 hours a week to live like a king/make committing decisions.” Jan, Research Analyst
