What is the role of Not-for-profit (NFP) organizations in government?
The general public is not always aware of just how large and important a role NFP organizations play in our democratic system. NFP organizations are leaders in innovation, are policy incubators, and are front-line service deliverers. Governments, most offices and officials, have specific staff that are meant to coordinate with NFPs — these are called stakeholder relations. Sure, the position is not limited to NFP stakeholders, but nonetheless, NFPs are major stakeholders for governments. Part of what makes them such important stakeholders is their direct access to grassroots and locals, who government officials serve. That is why their proposals hold a lot of weight, because they tend to come from the constituents themselves.
More specifically, NFPs can be the driving engine behind many policy proposals- ranging from economic policy to social services. That is why I am constantly impressed with organizations such as United Way, a large organization that uses its position and leadership abilities to engage those in need and make changes that help communities.
In our visit, we spoke about United Ways’ upcoming project, the Scarborough Golden Mile. This is a project that is set to deliver innovation and investments to the region. However, the transition of the neighbourhood may have negative effects for the local residents. United Way, as an NFP is working alongside private and public figures to help assist the community in transition. NFPs, such as the United Way, are critical to ensuring that local constituents have representation and an outlet for advocacy.
