Instagram is the most popular social media of today. However, with so many users and the recent algorithm changes, it is harder than ever to grow a following. Hard, thankfully, isn’t a synonym of impossible. Check out these tips to grow your audience.

1. Creative, original and quality content

This is almost a given. Creativity and originality are the best way to grab people’s attention. Put your own spin on what you are photographing. What is your perspective on the world? Finally, your content has to have quality. Poor quality images are a sure way to get low engagement.

2. Cross-promotion

I have already talked about this, but cross-promotion is an effective way of growing your following. Find someone that works in the similar area and has a similar size following. If you have five hundred followers and they have five hundred followers, the goal should be for both of you to have a thousand. Help each other.

3. Engage with your audience

Show your followers that there is a human being behind the account. Show them you care, respond to their messages, like their comments, pictures, etc. Connect with you followers.

4. Hashtags

Although by now most of us are sick of hashtags, and frankly, a bunch of hashtags looks quite distasteful. However, posts with hashtags do perform better than the ones without them. Just don’t overboard.

5. Re-engage your ghost followers

Although many of your inactive followers may be spam or inactive accounts, the most of them just don’t see your posts because of the new algorithm. Interact with them and it should get you back into their feeds. The more of your followers that interact with your content, the higher the chances of your content ending up in the explore page.

6. Instagram pods

This is something that is new to me. Pods are these groups of Instagrammers who agree to like and comment (with five words or more) on each other’s posts within the first thirty minutes. Supposedly, this helps with the algorithm and more people see your content in their feeds.

7. Consistency

Don’t post once in two weeks. Post a few times a week, but like and comment every day.
