This is one of those posts that I write with a very heavy heart and through a range of emotions. All of the cases that we cover touch me in some way, it’s hard for them not to, but there are some that cut a little bit deeper. The case of Thaddeus Sran is one of them. It’s one of those cases where I tried to hold on to some hope, but my gut told me that the outcome would be tragic.

We first heard of 2 year old Thaddeus Sran when his parents reported him missing on Wednesday, July 15th, 2020. Thaddeus’ parents told police that they put him to bed at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday night wearing a diaper, a red shirt and Spider-man pants. When they got up at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Thaddeus, who was born prematurely and had special needs, including using a feeding tube and being non-verbal, was missing from his bed. Immediately after Thaddeus was reported missing it seemed as if his parents were being forthcoming and cooperative. Madera Police Chief Dino Lawson said they were treating the case as an abduction and asked the community to reach out to them if they had any information that could help find Thaddeus. The FBI and US Marshalls were helping with the investigation. The family put together a $5000 reward for any information leading to the location of Thaddeus. Chief Lawson had promised they would leave no stone un-turned when looking for Thaddeus and he meant it.

Almost a week later, on July 21st, the Madera Police Department posted on Facebook that the parents had stopped cooperating with police. They stated that they believed the parent’s assistance would be helpful and that the MPD hoped that they would resume cooperating with detectives to help find Thaddeus. As soon as I heard this, chills ran down my spine. This is something you normally don’t hear when a child goes missing unless the parents are guilty of something. It was a huge red flag for me. At this point the hope I was grasping onto was gone. I knew in my heart, as so many of you did, that Thaddeus would be found, but not alive. All I could think was what have they done to this sweet, innocent little boy?

During this time, a few neighbors had spoken to the media and gave some interesting information. We learned that the home was completely fenced in, including the yard and also that the family had moved into the home just a couple of weeks before. The next door neighbor said he had never once seen little Thaddeus and he had not seen the mother either, until Thaddeus was reported missing. He questioned if Thaddeus had even been in the new home. I have that same question and so many more. After the police made the statement that the Srans were no longer working with them to help the investigation, Briseida, 29, and Sukhjinder Sran, 42, hired an attorney. Attorney Roger Nuttall released a statement on behalf of the Srans. This statement denied that the Srans stopped cooperating, accused the detectives of being accusatory and claimed the police stopped cooperating with them. It also referred to the death of an infant daughter of the Srans back in 2015, saying the child was born prematurely and passed away from SIDS and that it was a closed case.

On Thursday July 23rd, the burned remains of a 2 to 3 year old were found in a pit on rural farmland outside the city of Madera. It is presumed that the remains are those of Thaddeus Sran but an autopsy is being done to confirm that it’s him. The following morning at 7am, Sukhjinder and Briseida Sran, who is 8 months pregnant, were arrested on Suspicion of Murder and taken into custody. During the press conference, Madera Police declined to comment on the 2015 death of the infant girl, only saying that it may be a road they go down later in the case. The Srans have 3 other children that were removed from the home and Briseida is due to give birth in just a few weeks. Family members are trying to get custody of the 3 children who were taken by child welfare services. They say they’re shocked by what has happened and they can’t understand it. Our hearts go out to them because we can’t understand it either or what they’re going through right now.

With these arrests, we are a step closer to getting justice for Thaddeus but for now we’re only left with a growing list of questions. What happened to Thaddeus Sran? Was Thaddeus dead before the family moved? Did they move before reporting Thaddeus missing to make sure that any evidence in their previous home would be destroyed by the time anyone looked for him? Did they also kill their infant daughter 5 years ago? Could she or Thaddeus have been saved?
