Interview and Introduction by Carina Ortiz

LA-based singer Sage Charmaine just released her EP Don’t Leave Me. Sage’s songwriting and performance radiates through her constant deliverance of fresh music, live shows, and collaborations with other artists.

Don’t Leave Me includes a feature by Lil Aaron, songs co-written/produced by Rocky Lynch (The Driver Era), and a collaboration by one of Interscope Records’ newest signings, Alexander 23. On top of all this Sage also toured with Hey Violet this past summer.

Musemag had the opportunity to chat with Sage and discuss songwriting as well as future projects.

Q: Congrats on the release of your debut EP, don’t leave me! What was the songwriting process like for you on this project?

Thank you ❤

The songwriting process for me was a little bit different. I had always written solo since a little kid but my creative process was more serious this time around with legit producers on my shit for once, and they brought other writers on to create some songs with me. This was my first time doing this, but it was a really amazing experience that’s become regular for me. Being able to bounce ideas off of other songwriters is extremely helpful & as people say “the more the merrier” you know.

Q: How was touring with Hey Violet last summer? Was there any specific stand out moment on the tour for you?

It was amazing! I think what stood out the most was getting to actually meet the band & chill with them a bit. My manager, bestie, and I actually have been fans of their music for about 2 yrs now so actually getting to chill with them & have them be cool af was really nice.

Q: For listeners who are unfamiliar with your work, how would you describe your sound?

I would say I can be very experimental, but I’d classify myself as anti pop or indie pop. I feel like I fall under the alternative umbrella — I like to mix elements of Indie, Emo, & Pop.

Q: How would you distinguish yourself from other artists today?

I like to write about everything. For me, songwriting is therapeutic af so I’ll write about whatever I’m feeling. I feel like you can’t just expect 1 thing from me because I want to do something new every time.

Q: Is there a message you want listeners to take away from this EP?

I want listeners to find comfort in my music. The ep is all about feelings & relationships with all people and i was writing from experience so I hope it’s realistic and relatable for everyone

Q: Can we expect you at any other Emo Nite dates in the future?

I hope so, I love emo nite lol. I’ve performed there twice now, tell them to bring me a 3rd!!

Q: How soon can we expect a full-length album?

I’m about to start a few new projects soon!! So i’d say 6 months to a yr from now maybe?? (-;
