Spring in Your Step Playlist
Your pre Summer playlist for those days when nothing and everything is accomplished
Each Friday during Shotgun Summer I will be providing you with a playlist with a particular theme. It will be a mix of old favourites and new songs which have caught my ears. This week’s playlist is comprised of songs that seem like they were made for Spring and the transition into Summer. Enjoy.
Happy Kaytranada Remix — Pharrell Williams
Yes I know this song is overplayed. Yes I understand the entire song is basically a hook. And I don’t care about any of those things because this remix keeps the falsetto in place and let’s it ride on percussion heavy beat and anchors it to the ground. Let the smoothness make this song feel brand new all over again.
Save My Soul— Daye Jack
This is a song that lets you feel comfortable without ever getting comfortable. From it’s glitchy beat to Daye Jack’s intense yet crisp delivery. After giving “Save My Soul” a listen I suggest you download his first mixtape here.
No Passing (Otto and the Atom)— Freeze-Tag
The first thing you need to know about Freeze Tag is that his Twitter bio reads, “I like to eat jazz and listen to candy.” Yes, the songs he makes sound exactly like candy. And, yes, I’m mad I didn't come up with that line first.
1965— Zella Day
This is Zella Day. Is she on my ever growing list of music crushes? Duh. Have I lead you astray before? I think not.
Bridges — BROODS
You know those days when you wake up next to someone but don’t want to leave your bed the entire day. Or if you do leave your bed it’s to build a pillow fort, and that someone wants to go do stuff but you pull them back into bed telling them that they don’t want to miss a thing. Yeah, this song is for those days.
Flight 43 (NYC) — Daytrip
Just listen and thank me later. Okay? Okay.
MGD (Draft Day Dub) — Shad
Shad at his best. Having fun, rapping over Drake’s “Draft Day” with all of the usual references to sports, justice, with shout outs to Wiggins, the TNT crew, and the Raptors. What’s not to like?
Cocoa Butter Kisses — Chance the Rapper ft. Vic Mensa and Twista
The DJ who opened for Gambino played this song. The hook has been stuck in my head since then. And no, I don’t have a good reason for not loving this song more when I first dipped into Acid Rap.
Child’s Play — SZA ft. Chance the Rapper
That SZA tho. Seriously. This is a song where you drift into your darkest dreams. The beat lulls you in only for SZA to open the song with:
Ripping the heads off all my Barbie dolls
Toss them to the side, give them convertibles
Click vroom, I like the way it rides up
And it doesn't let up until it ends.
Deckchairs on the Moon — Bipolar Sunshine
This song is perfect for the months of May, June, July, and August. If you don’t agree we cannot be friends.
Numb — Skizzy Mars
The beat and hook make this song. And I might not get tired of it until next year. It feels like the perfect couple, don’t fight it just accept it and hope you’ll find the same synergy in your life one day.
I don’t think were in love
That’s just the drugs
Don’t they make you feel numb
You can’t feel at all
Maybe if we loved ourselves
It wouldn’t be so hard
It wouldn’t be so hard
To love each other
Pyramids (Frank Ocean Bootleg) — BSBD
I don’t think anyone asked for another “Pyramids” remix or bootleg but this one is done so well that nobody can complain.
Drink — Jon Waltz
It’s my rap darling from last year. Our relationship is escalating quickly. He might make an appearance on every playlist this summer. Just let it happen. You won’t regret it, I swear.
So High (SteLouse Flip) — Doja Cat
With respect to all of the songs above it, this is my favourite song right now. Have a good weekend and enjoy these until next week’s playlist and beyond.
