Would you imagine that you’ll able to sing into a machine and a song will come out?

Maybe you will download the app being your part of composer assistant by the end of this year. Let me introduce the project in detail from the youtube video.

The Introduction of IBM Watson Beat

Phony Ppl is a five person R&B group out of Brooklyn. That is, it’s usually a five person group. But sometimes there’s a sixth member, Watson. Watson is the supercomputer from IBM.

When Phony Ppl plays 10 seconds of music, Watson will listen ,analyze and use artificial intelligence creating a track in one of six different moods.

The left picture is playing music into Watson Beat. The right picture is you can choose the mood you want.

The six moods are amped, dark, romantic, worldy, spooky and angst. You can listen the track and play with it.

Play with the track which Watson generate!

At the same, you can import the MIDI track into your DAW, like Reaper.

There are two MIDI tracks from Watson Beat in the Reaper.

Unlike streaming music recommends songs based on what you like, Watson Beat makes music based on what you like.

At the heart of Watson Beat, there are a lot of machine learning algorithms, and artificial algorithms. It understands music theory, emotions and how music and emotions connect and correlate with each other.

So what it does is you play a piece of music and Watson is listening to it, and since it understands music theory and it can connect with emotions and moods. It takes that piece and learns that beat. It gets inspired by that piece you play, and adds on top of its layer of emotion.

Analyzing the Audio

Richard Daskas, the professional musician, says that they want to able to analyze audio, instead of just MIDI data, so that you can sing into it, or play a guitar into it, and then it could create whole compositions from audio files as well.

The Similarity of New Tracks

After we know the workflow of Watson Beat. What is the possibility of the same result from Watson Beat?

In the 2016 essay, IBM claims that Watson Beat never composes the same song twice and the new track is entirely different from the sample.

Is Watson Beat practical for musicians?

Would musicians actually make music with Watson Beat?

In the video, it states that every artist, musician may meet the writer’s block, feeling get stuck on the first idea. Watson is a good platform when you get stuck. For example, when you don’t know what to write, and just play a couple of notes, and it’ll give you some kind of inspiration. Provide a other way than you might originally think.

If the song is not great in first place, Watson could give you more seasoning.which things you can use to incorporate. That’s a way you might use Watson.

Listen the Results

After the initial introduction, you can listen the songs generating by Watson Beat. Next essay will introduce how the Watson Beat works in the computer.

Watson Beat seems like a dream for musicians, by the end of the 2017 year , IBM says an app is coming out.
