James Blunt’s “Monsters” will make you cry like you’ve never cried before. It may well be the saddest song ever written.

At the same time it’s a song of release and empowerment, sparking a range of emotions you don’t normally feel in the course of a three-minute pop song.

As 2019 draws to a close, I can say confidently that “Monsters” is certainly the best song of the year, the best song of the decade, and possibly the best song of the entire 20th century. And that’s from the power of the lyrics alone…the accompanying music is understated and unadorned.

“Monsters” is one of those rare songs where even reading the lyrics written down will move you to tears before James Blunt sings a note. So fair warning if you’re reading this in a public place…

Without being unfair to him, because I admire anyone who can write and perform music, for most of us James Blunt wouldn’t have been the first name that came to mind as the likely writer of one of the saddest and most touching songs ever written.

Most of us remember James Blunt from his 2004 “Back To Bedlam” album and the single “You’re Beautiful” from that album which went to Number One around the world in 2005.
