The word disappointment refers to a feeling of displeasure when one’s hopes or expectations fail to come to pass. Disappointment inevitably follows when God does not perform in the manner we think He should. This feeling is not necessarily sinful as it is interwoven in human nature, however, it often has a devastating effect that may lead to a wavering faith in God.

Some quick facts we must establish before moving on

  • God is in charge! He’s got absolute control over every molecule that floats around the universe

The Lord is king, and he rules the nations

Psalms 22:28 GNT

  • God’s will envelopes every act and decision made by every person at all times

You plotted evil against me, but God turned it into good, in order to preserve the lives of many people who are alive today because of what happened

Genesis 50:20 GNT

  • God will fund his plans

I am calling a man to come from the east; he will swoop down like a hawk and accomplish what I have planned. I have spoken, and it will be done

Isaiah 46:11

A lot of us have had those moping moments as we watch our carefully sculpted plans crumble. Well, just so you know, God didn’t sponsor those plans, not because He couldn’t, He simply chose not to. It really is that simple.

I can almost feel you cringe at that statement, and you’re probably thinking of how I don’t understand, guess what? you’re right, I really don’t understand. Truth be told, sometimes it seems like an unfair act of God, but that the exact opposite is true.

God chooses to act or not to act according to His perfect and Holy will in order to bring about His righteous purpose

Sometimes He lets us know His plans, and other times He does not. Sometimes we understand what He’s up to, other times we don’t. Whichever the case may be, the overarching goal of what He does will benefit His people, Romans 8:28, be it in life or in death.

We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him,8.28: in all things God works for good with those who love him; some manuscripts have all things work for good for those who love God. those whom he has called according to his purpose

Romans 8:28

So, how do we deal with disappointment in God?

Search out His will, align and submit yours to His. On those occasions that you earnestly search but still don’t know, trust in the love, righteousness, and purity that is bundled in God’s will for His people. That’s what he promised. Doing this will save us lots of grumbling, complaining, and nasty feelings of disappointment.

Henceforth, when next you make those complex plans, sit back a little, and ask yourself, have I searched, aligned, and submitted my will to the Father’s? If you’re not sure of your answer, then maybe your answer is a no. Confess as Jesus did:

“Father,” he said, “if you will, take this cup of suffering away from me. Not my will, however, but your will be done.”

Luke 22:42
