Muslim Women Seeking Allies
Under the Trump administration Muslims face a real threat. Our rights, mobility and security have been put in jeopardy. The silver lining is that with a clear threat it is much easier to find and connect with allies. We’ve already seen it happen with the tremendous outpouring of support by diverse people joining in protests and rallies across the country decrying the Muslim Ban.
I’ve always believed that the natural ally for Muslim women is other women of faith. The points of theology where we differ can be enumerated, but they are significantly outweighed by our similarities. Belief in God, compassion to God’s creation, honoring ones self, neighbors and guests, caring for the poor and oppressed these are the major themes in all the world religions. These commonalities are what we need to focus on and remember when we hear the divisive messages of hate coming from the administration.
I’ve been building a community for several years now of women who dress modestly and it’s made up of diverse women of faith. We’re breaking out of our silos to get to know one another, which is the only way to push back against fear-mongering. I plan to continue to provide a welcoming space where women of all backgrounds can come together commiserate and build solidarity.
In that spirit, I’ve produced a video to showcase that the desire for modest fashion can be one place to start and interfaith dialogue. Watch below:
