Athanasius’ Sound Doctrine and Why It Still Matters-Original Christianity
Beliefs of the Early Church
Athanasius eventually became Archbishop of Alexandria in Egypt, the city founded by Alexander the Great. Born into a Christian family in 296 AD, Athanasius was one of the most prominent early Church Fathers and a staunch defender of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus during a time of intense theological conflict. He served as the Archbishop of Alexandria for 45 years, from 328 AD until his death in 373, his tenure was marked by significant turmoil and repeated exiles.
In just one paragraph in his writings, which were substantial, Athanasius describes the Gospel as the early Christians understood it. It is simply stated and challenges the erroneous teaching common in many Churches these days.
“In the beginning wickedness did not exist. Nor indeed does it exist even now in those who are holy, nor does it in any way belong to their nature.” (from the manuscript ‘Against the Heathen’ )
Explained: Before the disobedience of Adam and Eve wickedness (sin) did not exist. Jesus came to right the sin (wickedness) problem. Those who receive His salvation are made holy. Wickedness (sin) no longer exists in their nature. Athanasius adds the emphasis; nor does it in any way belong to their nature.
