Philippians 4:6–8 (NIV)

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.

The year before my youngest son went off to college, I started worrying about him a lot. In fact, I became filled with anxiety and later had a bad case of empty nest syndrome. I secretly cried every day at home during his senior year in high school. I got stuck focusing on the “what ifs.”

What if he gets sick and needs to go to the hospital? What if he doesn’t do well in that new city or school? What if he gets caught up with the wrong crowd? These thoughts constantly circled through my mind.
