Be wary of the news

Things are often more positive than they seem

Things always seem to be very doom and gloom when it comes to climate change.

We need to remind ourselves that the media only really report on dramatic, negative things. That’s not to say I necessarily blame them; the only reason they keep reporting on the bad stuff is because that’s what we like to see and hear about the most. But a constant stream of shite makes us feel more negative, hopeless and powerless. When we wrongfully believe that nothing is improving, we may conclude that nothing we have tried so far is working and lose confidence in measures that actually work.

Sometimes we need a bit of positivity to remind ourselves that we’re making progress. So here are three things I picked out that should make us feel a bit more cheerful going into the next week:

Green energy is growing

BPs ‘Statistical Review of World Energy’ (a riveting read) says that renewable power grew 17% in 2018, the largest increment on record. Wind accounted for around half of that — onshore wind farms are ranked #2 on Drawdown’s list of highest impact solutions, so this bodes well!

Emissions are falling

The BBC reported that our emissions have fallen again, 2017 seeing us emit 2.7% fewer CO2e emissions than 2016.

Every day that passes marks one day closer to Trump potentially being voted out of office

At the time of publishing this, there are only 624 days left until the next US election.
