Introducing MUX

MUX Awards
MUX - Built for Mobile

--

We want you to think back to 2007, just over 10 years ago. In your mind’s eye, are you holding a smartphone?

If so, what were you doing on it? Perhaps you were checking your email, or playing Snake. But we can safely assume that what you weren’t doing was booking a chalet in Sweden, paying for a cab with your thumb, or tracking your new meditation habit.

You probably knew many people who didn’t own a smartphone. Back then, smartphone sales were modest, and the phones were limited in functionality — they were built for making calls and answering emails. The app store was a glimmer in Steve Jobs’s eye and the “CrackBerry” remained a virtual leash for busy executives. And when you booked a vacation, you did so from your desktop.

How things have changed. In 2016, 1.5 billion smartphones were sold world-wide. Between the Android and iOS app stores, there were over 5 million mobile apps available for download. And on average, people spend 5 hours on their phone a day, already on par with the hours spent watching television.

Even the term “software” already feels dated. In fact, we hardly think of our mobile apps as software programs the same way we considered Microsoft Encarta or Quicken. Instead, they’re intimate, personal companions, threaded through daily experiences so much so that it’s easy to take their very existence for granted.

This is why we’ve created the Mobile User Experience Awards (MUX). With a panel of over 100 leaders from companies like FaceBook, LinkedIn, Google and Dropbox, our mission is to celebrate incredible mobile experiences and the creators who bring them to life, and into our lives.

Through our awards, editorials and education, our aim is to not only engage and inspire the amazing creators of today, but those who’ll drive mobile design forward tomorrow.

And we’re only just getting started. We hope you’ll join us.
