Many people have a preference for homemade shampoo because of the gentle blend of ingredients that will not damage or strip your hair of its moisture and shine.

Commercial shampoos often contain detergents and chemicals such as artificial coloring and sodium lauryl sulfate which creates a foaming action found in many commercial and personal hygiene cleaning product formulations. This will not be an issue with homemade formulas as you can use natural oils and butters along with lye which is an alkaline based solution commonly known as potassium hydroxide when being used for liquid soap. Lye can be purchased from online suppliers. With the addition of selected oils, this homemade product will leave your hair feeling soft, silky and hydrated, and your scalp looking and feeling healthy.

The beauty of making homemade products is that they do not have the artificial preservatives found in commercial products, unfortunately, it will attract bacteria and slowly spoil even when refrigerated just like food, but do not let that put you off refrigerating as this will expand the life of your product.

Despite this minor setback, you can add preservative ingredients to extend the shelf life of your homemade product. High on the list of preservatives are Natural essential oils, high in antioxidants such as Jojoba, Vitamin E, Sandalwood, Sage, Tea tree oil, Clove, Cinnamon, Grapefruit seed oil and Rosemary oil.

It is also advisable to let the product cool down to below 120 degrees, as most preservatives will degrade when mixed in too soon. Also remember to sterilize your containers to dishwasher temperature or boil them using eco-friendly soap, then leave to cool before adding product.
